“What does dyslexia Mean?”
I’m the mother of three. My eldest child is the dyslexic. He’s the reason I do what I do. I founded ‘Dyslexia Answered’ 11 years ago in Crows Nest to answer the question what does dyslexia mean… I’ve also developed the online courses at dyslexia.com.au and I’m the author of an up-and-coming book.
I’m going to start off by saying statistically speaking, 10% of the population is dyslexic. That’s actually a conservative estimate. In America they feel it is even higher, around 20%. Dyslexia is genetic, it runs in families. There is no cure because there is nothing wrong. It is just a different way of processing information. Dyslexia is not related to intelligence. A lot of people think that dyslexic people are not intelligent, well that’s not the case. Quite often they have average or above average intelligence. So, dyslexia and intelligence are in fact not related. What does dyslexia mean is the most popular question I get. Well, the answer to what does dyslexia mean, would be it is a learning difficulty. It effects reading, writing and spelling. That’s the simplest way of answering what does dyslexia mean because there is no agreed definition for what dyslexia is. In fact dyslexia is not recognised in Australia.
