NAPLAN – Results Are Out , How Did Your Team Go? | 30th September, 2016 MARIANNE MULLALLY

The NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy) reports are out and schools and parents would be looking at how their kids have performed.

How did your child go?

If your child is in year 3, the national minimum standard is band 2. So if your child scored a band 1 or band 2, they are in the lowest 20% for their year group. You would hope your child is at least band 3 or above. By the time a child is in year 5, band 4 is the national minimum standard, and if their ‘dot’ is in band 4 or below, they are in the lowest 20% for their year group.

Primary school is equipped to help your child by putting them into remedial groups, but if your child has been in remediation and still scored in the lowest 20%, it’s time for you to supplement what the school has been doing and help your child at home.

Parents quite often don’t know how to help at home other than do the work for the child or give in to the tears and tantrums. There is no quick-fix but there is help. I have felt and experienced the frustration myself and if only someone had helped me help my child, I would have felt more confident with how I was approaching the situation.

Because of my experience, I’ve developed an online course you can do at home with your child, no matter what year they are in and you don’t have to have a teaching degree to do it. I use play- based, experiential learning where you learn about why your child might be struggling and supervise them working through the step-by- step lessons.

Don’t let your child struggle any more. You CAN help your child read and write and become a more confident learner.
